Uploading screenshots to Google Play Console
Where the graphic assets actually live, why listing changes get reviewed, and the difference between a main listing, a custom listing and an experiment. Verify current requirements in Play Console before you publish.
Reading time: about 6 minutes
Find Store presence, not the release track
Screenshots are metadata, not part of a release. In Play Console open your app, then Grow users → Store presence → Main store listing. Editing a release track will never show you a screenshot field.
Set the language before you touch the assets
The language selector sits at the top of the listing. Each language has its own complete set of graphic assets. Uploading to the wrong language and re-uploading later leaves stale artwork live in a market you were not watching.
Fill the feature graphic first
A 1024 × 500 banner is mandatory. Without it the listing cannot publish, and because it renders above the gallery, a mismatched banner undercuts every screenshot below it.
Upload two to eight phone screenshots
At least two, or Play refuses to publish. 1080 × 1920 is the practical target. Play validates ratio and edge length rather than an exact size, which means a badly proportioned file passes validation and still looks wrong in the store.
Add tablet assets if you declare tablet support
Separate 7 inch and 10 inch sections, up to eight images each. Missing tablet artwork on a tablet-capable app reduces visibility on tablet and Chromebook surfaces — it does not block publishing, so it is easy to leave undone for months.
Save and send for review
Listing changes go through review like a release does. Timing varies and is not instant; plan metadata updates ahead of a launch date rather than on it.
Consider a custom store listing or an experiment
Custom store listings let you serve different artwork by country, install state or acquisition channel. Store Listing Experiments split real traffic between gallery variants at no cost — the cheapest conversion work available to an Android app.
Three different things called a “listing”
Play uses one word for three surfaces, which is why teams often edit the wrong one.
Main store listing
The default gallery everyone sees. Localised per language. This is what you fill in first and what a search result links to.
Custom store listing
An alternative gallery served to a defined audience — by country, by install state, or by the URL an ad campaign uses. Useful when one market responds to a different message.
Store listing experiment
A live A/B test that splits real store traffic between your current gallery and up to a few variants, reporting installs per variant. Free, and the only way to know rather than guess.
How to run the third one properly is covered in A/B testing your store screenshots.
Validation errors and what causes them
These stop the save, before review ever sees the listing.
- “Screenshot does not meet the minimum size”
- A side is under 320 px. Re-export larger; 1080 × 1920 clears it comfortably.
- “Aspect ratio is not supported”
- One side is more than twice the other. Play accepts 16:9 and 9:16 shapes, not panoramas.
- “Image contains transparency”
- Flatten the PNG onto a solid background. Play rejects alpha in the feature graphic and screenshots.
- “File is too large”
- The per-screenshot cap is 8 MB. Export as JPEG or reduce the scale.
- “You must add at least 2 phone screenshots”
- The listing cannot publish with fewer than two. This blocks a first release surprisingly often.
Questions
Where are screenshots in Google Play Console?+
Grow users → Store presence → Main store listing, in the Graphic assets section. They are listing metadata, so they are not found anywhere under a release track.
How long do Play screenshot changes take to go live?+
Listing changes are reviewed, and the wait varies from hours to a few days depending on the app and the change. Treat it like a release: submit before your launch date, not on it.
How many screenshots does Play require?+
A minimum of two phone screenshots and a maximum of eight per device type. The feature graphic at 1024 × 500 is separately mandatory.
Can I show different screenshots in different countries?+
Yes, two ways. Localise the main store listing per language, or create a custom store listing targeted at specific countries. The second is what you want when the message differs, not just the language.
Do I need tablet screenshots to publish?+
No, publishing is not blocked. But if your app declares tablet support, missing tablet assets reduces your ranking and eligibility on tablet and Chromebook surfaces, which is a quiet, ongoing cost.
Bring a folder, not a pile of files
The Google Play export preset produces PlayStore/Phone and PlayStore/Tablet, split by language, at the sizes Play validates against.
