Games break most of the screenshot rules

Almost every piece of App Store screenshot advice is written for apps, and games are the exception to most of it. Here is which rules to drop, and the four that still decide whether your listing converts.

Four rules that do not apply

Following standard app advice in a game listing produces a smaller, quieter, less distinctive gallery than the competition.

Frame the device

Standard advice

Standard apps: a device shell signals "this is a real app" and grounds the composition.

For games

Games usually go full-bleed. A bezel shrinks the art and adds nothing — nobody doubts a game runs on a phone.

Keep the backdrop calm

Standard advice

Standard apps: a quiet backdrop stops the surround competing with the UI.

For games

The art is the product. Full-bleed key art and gameplay imagery, with text set over it, is the category convention.

Four to six word headlines

Standard advice

Standard apps: a short benefit line above the frame.

For games

Often two or three words, or none at all. Games sell a feeling, and a feeling is slower to read than it is to see.

Portrait for everything

Standard advice

Standard apps: portrait, because that is how the app is used.

For games

Match your actual orientation. A landscape game with portrait screenshots misrepresents the experience, and landscape frames occupy more of the gallery row.

Four that absolutely still apply

01

The first frame still decides everything

It is the one that appears in search results. For a game that means your most striking gameplay moment — not a logo, not a splash screen, and not a character select menu.

02

Show gameplay, not a cinematic

Pre-rendered key art that looks nothing like play is the most common cause of a one-star "this is not the game in the screenshots" review, and both stores treat misrepresented gameplay as a policy issue.

03

Legibility at thumbnail size is unforgiving

Ornate fantasy typefaces over a busy battle scene are unreadable at 150 px. If you use text, it needs a plate, a scrim or a solid area behind it.

04

Monetisation claims are reviewed

"Free to play" over a game with an immediate hard paywall, fake rewards, or simulated ads inside a screenshot are all rejection causes.

A six-frame game gallery

  1. 1The signature momentThe single most visually distinctive thing your game does. Not the tutorial.
  2. 2The core loopWhat players actually spend their time on, shown clearly enough to be understood in a second.
  3. 3ProgressionLevels, characters, upgrades, a map. The reason to open it again tomorrow.
  4. 4VarietyModes, biomes, opponents — the answer to "will this get boring".
  5. 5Social or competitiveLeaderboards, co-op, guilds. Only if they genuinely exist at launch.
  6. 6Scale or proofPlayer counts, awards or reviews, if real and current.

Where this tool fits, and where it does not

App Mockup Generator AI is built around framing app interfaces on a designed backdrop. That is a strong fit for game companion apps, utilities, puzzle and UI-driven games, and for any listing where a framed screen is the right presentation.

It is a weaker fit for full-bleed key-art compositions where you want no device shell at all. If that is your listing, the useful part of this page is the sequence above, and the export at original resolution if you want artwork without store-size framing.

Game listing questions

Should mobile game screenshots use a device frame?+

Usually not. Games are the main exception to device framing: full-bleed gameplay art fills more of the thumbnail and nobody needs convincing that a game runs on a phone. Framing makes more sense for a companion or utility app.

Portrait or landscape for game screenshots?+

Match how the game is actually played. A landscape game with portrait screenshots misrepresents the experience, and landscape frames also take up more of the gallery row, which is a real advantage.

Can I use key art instead of gameplay?+

One frame of key art is fine and often useful for tone. A whole gallery of it is the single most reliable way to earn "this is not the game in the screenshots" reviews, and both stores treat misrepresented gameplay as a policy problem.

Do games need headlines on screenshots?+

Less than other categories, and shorter when they do. Two or three words over a strong image is common. What matters more is that any text you do use has a plate or scrim behind it so it survives thumbnail scale.

Can this tool make game screenshots?+

It is built around framing app interfaces, so it is a strong fit for companion apps, game utilities and UI-driven or puzzle games, and a weaker one for full-bleed key-art compositions where no device shell is wanted. Exporting at original resolution gives you the artwork without store-size framing.
