Screenshot sizes & safe zones

Every dimension you need for the App Store and Google Play, plus the margins that keep your text readable once the stores crop it.

Reference · verify against App Store Connect and Play Console before submitting

Store requirements move around, and a rejected upload usually comes down to a few pixels. This page collects the sizes we export to, the limits each store enforces, and the safe margins we design inside.

iOS — App Store Connect

Apple accepts one screenshot set per device family. Upload the largest iPhone and iPad sizes and App Store Connect will scale them down for the smaller families in most cases.

Safe zones

Store screenshots are marketing images, not live UI, so there is no system status bar to avoid. What does bite you is cropping: the store gallery shows screenshots partially cut off at the edges, search results show them at thumbnail scale, and device frames eat into the canvas. Design inside these margins:

ZoneMarginWhat belongs there
Outer bleedTop and bottom 6–8%Background only — assume it can be clipped
Headline bandTop 12–22%One short benefit line, large enough to read at thumbnail size
Side gutters8% each sideNothing critical — keep text and logos inside
Device areaMiddle 60–70%The framed screen itself

The thumbnail test: shrink your screenshot to about 150 px wide. If the headline is no longer legible, the type is too small or the line is too long. Aim for four to six words at roughly 60–80 px cap height on a 1290 × 2796 canvas.

Common rejection causes

  • Alpha channel left in the PNG — flatten onto a solid background before uploading.
  • Wrong pixel dimensions for the declared device family, even by one pixel.
  • Screenshots that show a device frame Apple does not currently ship, or another platform’s hardware.
  • Placeholder or lorem content visible in the framed screen.
  • Pricing or promotional claims that the app does not actually honour.
  • Text that references a competing store or platform.

How we handle it

Every export from App Mockup Generator AI is rendered at the target device’s exact pixel dimensions, flattened to RGB with no transparency, and laid out inside the safe zones above. Pick your device in the generator and the canvas is set for you — see the ASO guide for what to put on it.
